Bridal Hair And Make Up Biography

Bridal make-up should look like the best version of yourself, so you feel confident, radiant and glowing. I like as little foundation as you can get away with – many brides mistakenly think they need more – but extra definition on the eyes, a slightly deeper lip colour and more blush is good as you are being photographed. You will also need a small touch-up kit so you can make the look last all day and night.

TOP BRIDAL MAKE-UP LOOKS

Bridal make-up is usually natural, gorgeous and glowing, with soft definition on the eyes and a natural lip – unless you are having a theme to your wedding, which means your make-up could be whatever you like! Blake Lively’s make-up is one of my most requested bridal looks at the moment. I think all the elements of the look should work together, so eyes are defined, brows are groomed, skin looks radiant and glowing, lashes are long and fluttery, and cheeks and lips look kissable and glamorous.

BRIDAL MAKE-UP TRIALS

It’s important to have quite a good idea of the look and feel of the wedding and what your dress will look like before you start trialing hair and make-up. It’s a good idea to start pulling pictures of hair and make-up you like so you have visual references for your make-up artist and hairdresser. I do think a trial is a necessity though, as it makes sure there are no surprises on your big day and you are confident that your make-up artist can make you look your best.

CHRISTABEL’S WEDDING DAY MAKE-UP KIT

Chanel Vitalumiere foundation, Laura Mercier Loose Powder and Secret Camouflage concealer, Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors, Chanel blushes and eyeshadows, Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown eyeshadows and lipsticks. And waterproof mascara for the whole bridal party – everybody cries at weddings!

WEDDING TOUCH-UP KIT

I always recommend pressed powder, as it’s easier to carry, with a small powder brush and a tiny mirror for re-application on the go and lipstick, at the very minimum. Depending on what’s important to you, I usually recommend a gloss as well, plus tissues for those teary moments – dab, don’t wipe! A few Q-tips are also handy for any make-up malfunctions. Give your touch-up kit to your matron of honour or bridesmaid to carry, and get them to tell you if your make-up looks less than pristine. I recommend you check your make-up before you get out of the car, before you walk down the aisle and before your photographs. During the reception you’ll hopefully be having too much fun to be bothered!

BEST KATE: MIDDLETON OR MOSS?

Probably Kate Middleton, as I thought she looked healthy and beautiful. She was slightly too heavy handed with the eyeliner, but strong eyeliner is her look. She did a fabulous job of doing her own make-up.Kate Moss I thought could have done with a little bit more colour on her face, as she looked a bit too natural in my opinion – perhaps a slightly brighter blush would have been good. Still, she always looks pretty amazing and her wedding day was no exception.

THOUGHTS ON STYLE-MAKER KATIE SHILLINGFORD’S WEDDING DAY RED LIP?

I think it’s fabulous to see something unexpected at a wedding and certainly, if a strong lip is your thing and that’s how you think you look best, you should absolutely go for it. You should look and feel spectacular on your wedding day – like the most relaxed, radiant and happy version of yourself, so whatever makes you feel gorgeous is the look to go for. However it’s not the day to bust out a new, trendy make-up look as it will instantly date your wedding photos.

EXPERT ADVICE FOR BRIDE-TO-BES

Don’t try out a new facialist, spray tanner or brow waxer right before the wedding – an allergic reaction or badly styled brow is not what you want for your walk down the aisle.

Give yourself time on the day to be pampered by your hair and make-up team. If your family can make you feel a bit stressed, don’t feel bad about having some time to yourself to get your make-up done. Make-up can be very calming and that little oasis of peace before the big event can be a lifesaver.

Don’t forget the SPF if it’s an outdoor wedding! You don’t want to be lobster red two hours into the reception. Check how much powder your skin will need – you don’t want to go too heavy as it’s very ageing, but you also don’t want to look greasy during the reception or in the photos.

And finally, think about the light you will be photographed in and also the time and place of the wedding. Your make-up artist should be able to adjust your colours and application to suit.

WEDDING DAY HAIR DISASTER

I had the most lo-fi wedding possible – in fact it was nearly an elopement! Just me, my fiancé and a tropical island destination. I wanted to keep it simple and make sure there were no nasty surprises on the day so I did my own make-up (with a practice run before with a photographer friend to check how my make-up photographed), and had my fab Sydney hairdresser taught me how my hair should be done, as I wanted 1930s marcel waves to complement my long, 1930s satin gown. All I needed was a curling iron and a hairdresser – not that complicated… or so I thought.

I turned up for my hair appointment on the day of the wedding only to be told one of the guests had borrowed the island’s curling iron and never brought it back! I had to go for a walk and take a few deep breaths as I’d had my heart set on that hairstyle. One expensive blow-dry and a wonderful wedding later it became my ‘thing that went wrong’ (and there is always one). I just consider myself lucky it was something I could live with, not like the ‘bride who forgot her shoes’, or the ‘bride whose car didn’t turn up for two-and-a-half hours and then got stuck in traffic in the rain’. Yes, both real brides that I have worked with! The moral of the story? Don’t forget to pack your sense of humour on your wedding day – at some point you might need it.
